A Garden Wedding

Soon-to-be Mr. AllDressedUp and I went to a beautiful garden wedding this past weekend at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh.  It was such a gorgeous setting that I thought I'd share a couple of pictures.  And maybe brag about share a great deal I got on a dress to wear to the wedding.  ;)

One of the corridors within the conservatory

The Broderie Room, where the wedding took place.  A gorgeous setting, yes?

The above picture is the view exactly as wedding guests saw it.  There was an intimate group of about 30 of us.  The bride and groom stood at the center of the room.  The groom, who is a childhood friend of the fiance, was absolutely glowing as he waited for his bride to come down the aisle.

The fiance and I after the nuptials

Here's the outfit:
Sunglasses: Marc Jacobs
Dress: Simply Vera by Vera Wang
Bangle: J.Lo (remember when she had a jewelry line?)
Shoes: Shoedazzle

Okay, now for a brief tangent.  I have to tell you guys about that dress.  The fiance and I took a trip into Kohl's to look for some shoes for him to wear to school (he's a teacher, too).  I did a quick sweep through the misses department, and a pretty pattern on the sale rack caught my attention.  I started digging, and I found this dress.  In my size.  For $5.  BOOYAH.  I was so excited!  I plan on wearing it again for my friend's rehearsal dinner in a couple of weeks.  I was also excited to get home and find that I have three cardigans that match it perfectly (one J.Crew Jackie in a light coral, one from Loft in a dark coral, and one from Target in a navy).  There were plenty sizes of this dress left on the sale rack, and I'm really not sure why.  I almost felt wrong buying it for $5, when I think the original price was somewhere around $65-$70.  I wondered what could possibly be wrong with the dress that there were so many left at such a great price.  I wore it for 8 or 9 hours, and I couldn't find anything wrong with it at all.  /endtangent.

After the ceremony, we went to a reception at a restaurant across town.  We had a yummy dinner followed by even yummier cheesecake.  It was really heartwarming to see friends we hadn't seen for a while, catch up with the groom, and meet his adorable bride.  If my parents and fiance would have let me, I'd have loved to have a small, intimate garden wedding just like this one!

What should I wear?

The first day of school is fast approaching (we have in-service today and tomorrow, and kids come on Wednesday...eek!), and of course, I'm having an outfit crisis.  I have five polyvore sets below, and like the lovely AppGal did in this post, I'm going to ask you guys to vote on what you all think I should wear on the first day of school.  AppGal also inspired a couple of my first day outfits, particularly the outfit with the paisley pencil skirt and the outfit with the pleated skirt and striped top.  Alright guys, here they are:

J.Crew Reviews: Blythe shirtdress, Maisie dress, and Liquid silk skirt

I had a shopping date yesterday with a couple of my friends, and we went to J.Crew to do some back to school shopping.  My intentions were just to go back for my beloved Maisie dress (I swear!), but I ended up trying a few other items as well.  I say this all the time, but my darn personal shopper is WAY too good at her job.

Before I get to the reviews from my fitting room escapades, I wanted to share with you that our personal shopper at our local J.Crew told us that they would not be stocking our store with any of the cashmere items anymore.  I'm not sure if this is just our local J.Crew, or all J.Crews.  Apparently corporate told our store that it wasn't worth sending out the cashmere items because they don't sell in the stores as well as they do online.  Anyone else hear about this?  One of my friends was very disappointed because she wanted to try on one of the cashmere sweaters.  Anyway, just wanted to give everyone a heads up on that in case you make a special trip to the B&M to try on cashmere and it isn't there.

Switching gears, onto the reviews.

This dress was on my favorites list for the Crew's new fall arrivals, so when I saw it when I walked through the door, I grabbed it.  I couldn't help myself.  The bright gorgeous color made me do it.  Here's a closer shot:

I must say, when I first tried the dress on, I was a little disappointed.  I am so in love with my Blythe blouses, and the dress fell a little short of my high expectations.  However, the longer I had it on, the more I liked it.
Price: $178
Size:  4
Pros:  Wearing the silk felt luxe, and the color is bright, but very wearable.
Cons:  The dress felt a little too drapey at first, and the belt didn't give it the shape that I had hoped it would (that's why I just gave up and tied it, as you can see in the photo above).  Here's a picture from the side to illustrate the draping:

I think overall, I just like my clothes to be more structured, and when I let go of that notion, I liked the dress quite a bit more.

The Maisie dress in getaway green

I bought (and reviewed - see the link above) this dress in abstract floral, but my personal shopper threw the getaway green color in my dressing room, so I tried it on to review for you guys.
Price:  $178
Size:  4*
Pros:  The color on this dress is much brighter - and prettier, IMO - than it looks in the stock photo on the website.  It was very flattering on both my friend (who has similar coloring) and me.  The dress flows beautifully, and the fit is loose and comfortable.
Cons:  None that I could find
I left this dress in the store, but only because I was already buying the abstract floral Maisie, and I couldn't justify paying almost full price (I used my educator discount) for both dresses at once.
*A note about the sizing: I actually bought the floral dress in a size 2.  I really couldn't find any difference in sizing other than with the 2, the elastic waist is a little higher up, to give the dress more of a babydoll vibe.  On the 4, as you can see in the picture, the dress has a more boho vibe because the waist sits lower.  I sized down on this, so if you generally wear a 4 and you're not too tall, you could probably size down, too.

Liquid silk skirt in dark navy and bright dahlia

I tried this skirt on in three different sizes: 4, 2, and 0.  I took pictures of all 3, so I'll show you those first and explain the differences.

Size 4:
The size 4 sat very low on my waist, and I wasn't a fan of the length when it was on my "natural waist."  The site has the model wearing it on her natural waist, and the measurements are for your natural waist, but I like things to sit at the smallest part of my waist instead.  This skirt really fit much better all around when it sat there.

Size 2:

This is the size I ended up buying.  The fit was much more flattering and comfortable, and with heels, the length will look much more flattering (I tried on the leopard wedges with this just to see how it would look with heels, so those of you who are shorter that are considering this skirt, I'd say go for it and pair it with a pretty heel.).  BTW, love this with the boatneck painter tee in navy stripe.  So much so, in fact, that I bought the tee to go with the skirt.

Size 0 in bright dahlia
Sorry that this pic is blurry.  Nonetheless, you can still see that though the size 0 fit my waist, it created an odd fabric flow/draping pattern.  This is the reason I went with the 2.

I feel like I covered the pros and cons with the explanations of sizes, so I'll just say a couple more things about this skirt.  I really had no intentions of buying another skirt, but this skirt can so easily be dressed up or dressed down that I think it will be extremely versatile.  I just got a vintage navy pleated skirt, so I went with the bright dahlia skirt instead.  The jury's still out on whether I'll keep it or exchange it for the navy color.

Today is my last day of summer vacation :( so be on the lookout for a first day of school outfit post soon!  I'm not sure what I want to wear yet, so I might need some help :)

Enjoy your evening!

OOTD August 25: A Day Date

Top: NY&Co.
Shorts: Mossimo for Target
Necklace: Target
Bracelets: NY&Co. and Kards Unlimited
Shoes: Candies for Kohls

The top I'm wearing here is New York & Company's Big Pockets Silky Blouse, and at $39.95, it's a much cheaper alternative to J.Crew's Blythe and Elodie blouses.  I'm wearing an XS, and I probably could have sized up to a small.  However, when I wear this top to school, I plan on wearing a cami under it, as it is pretty sheer.  I will probably keep the top button (which is gapping in this picture) unbuttoned.  The buttons gapping weren't really an ongoing issue when I wore this top yesterday.  I just happened to be standing at juuust the right angle when the fiance snapped this picture for me.

The fiance and I are trying to suck all of the life we can out of our remaining few days of summer vacation (sob), and we decided to go on a day date to Pittsburgh's South Side.  We spent the better part of the day moseying the streets of the South Side, stopping in a few clothing boutiques (I found a new vintage clothes store!  Pics coming soon of my loot) to see what we could find.  We also stopped at a great pretzel place called The Pretzel Shop for a quick snack.  We ended our South Side jaunt with a quick spin around H&M, and I found a couple of cute pieces for fall.

After our afternoon at the South Side, we went to our local mall to get some information about registering at Macy's and Crate & Barrel.  Then, we ended our day date with dinner at The Cheesecake Factory.  I may or may not have polished off a piece of chocolate tuxedo cream cheesecake for breakfast this morning.  ;)

Happy Friday, everyone!

OOTD August 5 and some wedding chatter

Top: Loft Basic Tee
Pants: J.Crew Collection Cafe Capri
Necklace: J.Crew
Belt: J.Crew Outlet
Shoes: Cole Haan Air Lyric Ballet Flat

After I got my coveted pink pants, I couldn't wait for just the right opportunity to wear them.  After all, no matter how fabulous a girl may feel on any given day, she should be aware that not every occasion is suited for shiny pink pants.  So, when my fiance and I took his parents to tour our wedding venue, I knew this would be the perfect time to test out the pants.  I just wasn't sure how to wear them for a relatively casual, hot day.  Then, I remembered a post by the lovely DaniBP aptly titled Pink Pants, and I was inspired.  She wears her gorgeous blush pink capris with a black cashmere tee, and the result is a look that is classic and can be worn anytime.  When I wear this outfit to school (shudder) in the coming weeks, I'll probably wear my Cole Haan Air peep toes, but for this day, I knew we'd be doing quite a bit of walking in the city, and my poor tootsies were still recovering from ultimate frisbee on the beach.

So, I can't just mention my our (Sorry, love!) wedding venue without telling you guys about it.  The day we first chose our venue, we had planned to tour two places.  We went to the first place, which was actually my first choice before the tours, and we were a bit disenchanted by it.  It was a beautiful venue, but it didn't come furnished with anything.  Tables, chairs, linens, wait staff, catering, etc. had to be brought in by separate vendors.  For our rather large guest list, it didn't seem like that was going to be the way we wanted to go.

I was bummed, and we trudged off to our second appointment of the day discussing our options.  Then, we met Heather at Pittsburgh's Grand Hall at the Priory, and our spirits lifted.  We toured the hotel attached to the grand ballroom (which once was a Catholic church that was remodeled into a beautiful banquet hall), and when Heather opened the doors into the grand ballroom, this is what we saw:
BTW, this photo is taken by the absoutely amazing Leeann Marie at Leeann Marie Photography, who also happens to be our wedding photographer. ;)

So, my fiance, my mom, my dad, Heather, and I walked into the Grand Hall, and I got tears in my eyes.  I turned to my fiance and said, "This is where we're going to get married."  It was a done deal.  The venue has a gorgeous courtyard where guests can hang out during cocktail hour,  and it also has a beautiful and newly redone garden that will be awesome for pictures.

A wedding in the courtyard, also from Leeann Marie Photography

A shot of our venue from the garden, from our venue's blog

Over the next ten months or so, you guys might just have to humor me.  I'll probably blog about wedding-related things every once in a while.  Can you tell I'm just a little excited?  :)

J.Crew Review: No.2 Pencil Skirt in double-serge wool

Hi all!  Before I get to the review, I know I have quite a few blogger friends in the greater D.C. area, and I want you all to know that I'm thinking about you.  The fiance's sister lives and works in D.C., and she was evacuated from her building today after the earthquake and was pretty alarmed.  I hope you are all safe and free of any kind of damage.

On to the review.

After being waitlisted, I finally received this beauty in the mail, and I couldn't be happier with it.  The jazzy purple color is sold out on the website, but lots of other yummy hues are still available.  I am considering buying this skirt in viridian green or vibrant flame once I'm off my fiance-mandated spending moratorium, only because the jazzy purple color is so gorgeous, so I imagine the other colors are as well.

The skirt is a size 4, and it fits TTS.  It's a little big in my waist, but I always have put up with that problem in order to fit my hips.  The color is a slightly deeper purple than the stock photo.  I had pictured something a little closer to the bright dahlia color.

The double-serge wool gives the skirt a beautiful, heavy texture and adds structure to keep everything in, so to speak.

Don't mind the tag sticking out the back.  I didn't know it was sticking up, and the fiance declined to tell me about it.  Men and their lack of attention to detail.  ;)  Anyway, the only thing that I don't like about this skirt is the 23 1/2" length.  The only other pencil skirt I have from J.Crew (other than my new paisley skirt) is the Oak Tweed pencil skirt, and it's 21 1/2" inches long.  That length hit just above my knees and was perfect on my short little legs.  The extra two inches of fabric dwarfs my legs even further than they already appear.  This is extremely apparent from the picture of the back of the skirt.  I think I'll get the skirt hemmed before school starts next week.  Anyone else miss the 21 1/2" length that was around for about a season?

I've already tried this skirt on with my Cecilia cami, above, and with my tippi sweater in the bright dahlia color.  I love the monochromatic look with a slightly lighter color on top, sort of like in this Looks We Love look:

I really think this skirt is going to be extremely versatile, even in the purple color.  I can just picture wearing it throughout the year, almost as a neutral as long as I don't get too out of hand with the rest of the outfit.

I hope you all have a wonderful evening!

Carpe Diem and Cupcakes

I once read that people feel more satisfied when they spend money on experiences instead of on material objects.  As someone who harbors a passion for all things sartorial, I tend to feel pretty darn satisfied with some of my material objects.  However, this past year, I've begun to develop a love of new experiences and adventure.  This carpe diem attitude can lead me anywhere from checking out a new farmers market to ziplining in the forests of the Dominican Republic.  This past weekend, my new outlook lead me to a cupcake decorating class conducted by the awesome people at Charm City Cupcakes.

A few weeks ago, I saw a Groupon for Cupcake Decorating 101.  Within the past year, I've started baking and decorating cupcakes and cookies as a hobby, so I thought the workshop would not only be fun, but also be a great learning experience.   I saw on facebook that one of my friends had already bought a groupon for the class, so shot her a text and purchased the Groupon, too.  Saturday, we piled into the car, headed to the city, and took our seats at a table in a room on the third floor of the Renaissance Hotel.  We were each equipped with a kit (Groupon alleges that it was worth $100, but I know I paid about $12 for mine that I have sitting in my cupboard), two coffee cups of buttercream, a coupler (that round thing that allows you to switch your decorating tips from icing bag to icing bag), and toothpicks for mixing our icing:

After unpacking our kits, we were taught how to cut our icing bags in order to fit the decorating tips.  Then, we got to choose our colors for our icing and load up our icing bags.  I thought I'd try to make my icing a foresty moss green and an airy blush pink, because those are my wedding colors.  We didn't have much time to really perfect our colors, so instead, I ended up with a preppy color combination reminiscent of Easter eggs and one of my Lily Pulitzer golf skirts:

I didn't let my dye debacle ruin my afternoon (carpe diem, right?), and I trudged onward.  Next, we were told that we were going to begin table decorations.  I was unsure of how we were going to decorate the table, until I learned that we were to practice our icing technique (90 degree angle! Medium pressure!) on. our. placemats.  As anal retentive industrious teachers, my friend and I weren't too excited about this part for two reasons: 1.  We didn't like the idea of wasting our precious icing on a placemat, and 2. You mean we're supposed to get icing on the table?  On purpose?  But, like model students, we did what we were told:

At this point, we were a good hour into the workshop, and we still hadn't seen cupcakes.  Finally, we were told to "clear the decks" (which means put everything to the side and get new placemats - don't worry, I ate the icing off of mine before I crumpled it) in preparation for the cupcakes.  We each received three chocolate and three vanilla cupcakes.  They smelled heavenly.

As the baked goods were being doled out, we were dismissed table by table to the cupcake bar.  Yes, I said cupcake bar.  In my mind, there aren't two words in the English language that you could unite to make a better combination.  Here's my view of the cupcake bar (I really do love saying and typing those two words together.  They just flow out of the mouth and off the fingertips so easily.  Cupcake bar.  This truly needs to be a permanent fixture in my vocabulary.):

It looks way less exciting in this picture than it was in person.  Canisters upon canisters of sprinkles.  Need I say more?

At the cupcake bar, we got to choose three kinds of sprinkles and three decorating rings.  I thought of the sprinkles and rings as accessories, and I had no trouble picking out three of each:

At other tables, there was a Charm City employee on-hand to teach a few decorating techniques.  Our Charm City employee happened to be the woman running the entire workshop, so we were kind of on our own.

When we got back from the cupcake bar, the other women at our table sat down and got right to work decorating their cupcakes.  Again, my teacher friend and I couldn't quite do it.  No one was there giving us directions!  What were we supposed to do?  And how were we supposed to do it?  We both literally picked up our icing bags three times to begin decorating before putting them down again.  It just didn't feel right to start without someone giving us the go-ahead.  Finally, another employee came over, showed us how to fill a cupcake with icing (way easier than you'd think, btw), and gave us the official green light we so badly desired to get started.  After decorating for about 10 minutes, these were my finished creations:

I got lots of compliments on them, but as a typical perfectionist Virgo, I wasn't quite satisfied with how they turned out.  I did, however, learn a couple of techniques to try for my back-to-school cupcakes that I plan on making next week.

Overall, the experience was fun, but the general consensus of the group was that we were all glad we had used a Groupon and hadn't paid full price for the workshop.  It was crowded, and we didn't really learn how to decorate; we just learned how to prepare to decorate.  The practice never hurts, though!

Tomorrow or Wednesday, I plan to be back to fashion blogging with a review of my J.Crew double-serge wool no. 2 pencil skirt that finally arrived in the mail.  The jazzy purple color is gorgeous, you guys.  Can't wait to show you!

For now, have a wonderful day!

Thank you, J.Crew (and some of my favorites)

I was pretty pumped when I opened my J.Crew email this morning and saw that they are now offering flat-rate shipping for $8.95 and free shipping for orders over $175.  I also couldn't wait to get home from working in my classroom (blech) to check out the new arrivals (yay!).  After the last roll-out, I had a feeling this update was going to have some great pieces in it.

Before I get into my picks, the sweater from my B&M that I could not identify in this post is actually the Fisherman sweater from the new arrivals.  It's reviewed with pictures in the post mentioned above in the heather honey and deep plum colors.  I also (unbeknownst to me at the time) tried on and reviewed the origami mini in houndstooth in this post

Now, on to the items I'm lusting for after this rollout.

Double-cloth townhouse trench
The shape, buttons, and available colors make me want to order this rightthissecond.  The $350 price tag, though not unreasonable, is stopping me.  The fiance and I are putting ourselves on a spending moratorium to save up for a few wedding essentials, as well as a new bed, and spending $350 on a coat that isn't even a long trench just seems to be superfluous right now.  This will be going on my wishlist in the vibrant flame color, though.  It would be the perfect way to cheer up on a cold day.
Blythe shirtdress
This silk shirtdress seems to stay true to its moniker with a beautiful, feminine silhouette and texture.  This just looks so easy to wear, and it looks like it would make its possessor feel like an absolute lady when she dons this dress.  I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should put this dress or the Maisie dress in abstract floral on my wishlist.  What do you think?
Two-tone circle skirt
This skirt reminds me of my grandma, but in a good, vintage fashion sort of way.  I love the caramel and grey colors together, and I love the length.  As a part of the collection, this skirt comes with a $250 price tag, so I will probably have to just stare at it lustily on my computer until a generous coupon code comes along.

Merino pleated skirt
I have never worn a pleated skirt, and I can't imagine that it would look good on my curves, but I can't help but love looking at them anyway.  If this skirt came in colors other than black or "saddle" (pictured above), I might be more willing to give it a try.  Nonetheless, I imagine it would make an excellent staple for girls with less of a hind end than myself. :)
No new tops or pants really seemed to entice me, but looking through my favorites, I can see why.  I'm really loving feminine, vintage-looking skirts and dresses for the fall.  I've always loved a vintage silhouette, and I'm ecstatic that stores are beginning to carry pieces that lend themselves to that type of look.  I guess I have Mad Men to thank for that.

Side-note: My double-serge no. 2 pencil skirt in jazzy purple should be arriving within the next day or two, so when it does, I'll make sure to take some pictures and post a review.

Have you checked out the new arrivals?  If so, which pieces are you coveting?

OOTD: Red and Recycled

Note: I wrote this entire post, then went to publish it, and it disappeared completely. So I’m sorry if a bit of anger or frustration seeps through my writing. BLAH!  This shall be my lesson of the day: always type in Word first.  Anywho, onward and upward.

This past weekend was busy busy busy, guys! Being the hardcore wannabe athletes that we are, my fiance and I had ultimate frisbee playoffs on Saturday, so we got up bright and early to compete with our team. Sadly, we lost both of our games in a double elimination tournament, but we decided that we earned a date night.

We went to a fun restaurant called BRGR. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, I highly suggest you try it. Yummy yummy…burgers, of course! If you are a friend of the bovine, they also have turkey and veggie burgers. Those are on my list to try next time. We also saw waitresses carrying milkshakes that looked to-die-for, but we went to our favorite fro-yo place for dessert instead. First, a little something for the foodies:
A well-done cheeseburger with white cheddar cheese on a whole wheat bun. It was perfection.

Here’s what I wore:

Tank: Anthropologie
Jeans: Joe’s Jeans, Anthropologie
Cardi: Merona, Target
Shoes: Mossimo, Target
Feather earrings: Local farmer’s market
Wooden bracelet: A vendor at our hotel in Punta Cana
Books bracelet: Kards Unlimited
Even though the fiancĂ© likes to call this my “marching band shirt,” I love it. The orange-y, fiery red color is beautiful, the cut is super-flattering for a curvy figure, and the buttons are the perfect extra adornment. My only complaint is that the panel in the middle is pretty low, so I can’t wear this shirt to school. It’ll just have to make weekend appearances in my wardrobe until next summer.

I can't resist showing you a close-up of the bracelets I’m wearing:

As an English teacher, I melt over almost all clothes and accessories that are literature-related or inspired. This I Read Banned Books bracelet is no exception. Each link of the bracelet features the cover of a book that has been frequently banned, and some of them just happen to be my favorites: To Kill a Mockingbird, Howl, Huckleberry Finn, Go Ask Alice, and Alice in Wonderland. I love wearing this bracelet to school. It’s my own little way of sticking my tongue out at The System ;)

I made a polyvore for today’s OOTD, (which is showing up at the end of this post for some reason; Blogger and I are about to have it out, Greasers/Socs style) but I made a couple of changes. The earrings, bracelet, and cardigan are nowhere to be found online, so I found similar substitutions. The recycled bag is actually sort of a larger version of the wristlet that I currently carry, which is made out of recycled newspaper from Mexico. My wonderful mama bought it for me at an airport on one of her excursions, so I’m fairly sure I won’t be able to find it anywhere on the web either.

The fiancĂ© and I were up and running all day on Sunday as well, with picnics and a visit with his grandmother, who is in town. During the summer, I don’t mind when my weekends are jam-packed with plans, but as the school year approaches, I’m hoping our schedule calms down a bit. I’m not someone who benefits physically or mentally from going non-stop, yet that always seems to be the way we live!

Was your weekend as hectic as mine was, or did you get to relax and recharge?
